Thanks for the shout out :) Since I will reach all these stages before you let me share my three strategies--retirement homes in Coimbatore (it's retirement central) and even better, staying near same friends I'm investing all my time and energy in right now haha. We will hold each other up. Also a written DNR policy. Highly recommend Atul Gawande's Being Mortal where he examines that though medical breakthroughs now keep us alive longer it comes at a big cost.
Thank you for writing this..we too are a childless couple by choice..my thoughts too having been turning to worries about our final stages on this earth..loved your fresh perspective..on that note…would love if you write on the decision to be childless…do people have regrets..I am still debating my choice…and constantly worry I would regret it in my old age
Hi Deepti, the term I learnt was 'child free'. Especially since this is entirely by choice. Here's my piece https://savvysoumya.substack.com/p/i-am-not-the-mother-of-my-child. Perhaps it will help. I don't think I am the nurturing types. I am not very brave. I am not the mom material. So it just helped to take a decision and run with it!
Moreover, a child should be had only for the pure joy of being a parent. And I have seen only very few exceptional parents. You know the kinds who were meant to be. I am sure there are many more. To be fair, I don't have a very large circle of friends who have kids.
To have an insurance for your old age is not why a child should be had, I feel. It is a life you are bringing in this world. You are responsible for it, don't make the baby responsible for you from the very time you think of having a child. Having said that those who want kids should certainly have one. It can wreck your mental health if you don't but having them for the right reasons is the best gift you can give a child.
You will write novels in Malayalam and be an award winning writer- Death n all door ki baat hain tumhareliye. 99 beat karneke liye bahut samay baaki hain dost.
I loved your piece! How you could so delicately handle a sensitive subject and bring out the concerns in a humorous way was fascinating! Have you read Ann Patchett’s essay on deciding to be ‘child free’? It was a fascinating read well. I think it’s titled ‘There are no children here’.
